Poppies

Poppies have started coming out along the old railway path. The appearance of the petals is unusual, isn't it? They look somehow as if they are made of a very fine crumpled silk. But this impression may simply be because when I was a very small child I used to make dresses for the fairies out of poppy petals. I would leave them out in the garden by the hedge and mysteriously they would disappear. Somehow I really knew that my father, who had suggested the whole enterprise, had taken them away, but this didn't make the whole thing any less magical for me.
